Hands On: What the Microsoft Teams Mobile App Can Do
Microsoft Teams is now mostly available (GA). There'southward a lot to like in Microsoft's Slack competitor, including deeper channel management and admission to the full suite of Microsoft Office 365 apps inside the online collaboration experience. You can read the total review of Microsoft Teams for all of the details. But, on the mobile capabilities of Microsoft Teams, nosotros wanted to dig a chip deeper here.
The mobile experiences of apps such as Asana, Atlassian HipChat, and Slack are a large part of their value to the mod, continued worker. PCMag got an early opportunity to test out Microsoft Teams. I downloaded the Microsoft Teams app for iOS to run into how the feel translated to mobile and what features are available from the become-proceed Android, iOS, and Windows Telephone.
User Interface
The mobile user interface (UI) for Microsoft Teams is simple. The app takes the minimalist left-hand navigation carte of the desktop app and pares it down even farther. When you lot download the Microsoft Teams app and sign into your team, the first thing you lot meet is the main Activity feed with recent mentions, conversations, announcements, and squad deportment. They are all ordered chronologically. Y'all can filter the feed past using the Search icon on the top left-hand side, or choose filter options on the top right-hand side to sort by unread messages, mentions, replies, users yous're following, or post likes.
This GA version of the Microsoft Teams app doesn't try to throw also much functionality at you lot in its clean purple and white UI. The bottom card bar only has four icons: Activity, Chat, Teams, and More (basic profile info, saved posts, and settings). Y'all tin can't fix upwards meetings or configure deeper settings across the mobile-specific stuff: notifications, search history, and storage.
The app is designed for squad conversation and basic collaboration on the go. The Chat tab feels but like that of Slack'south mobile app, or the chat tabs in the Facebook Messenger and LinkedIn apps. There'due south a "Start a new chat" icon on the top correct-hand side, higher up a list of your most recent chats with thumbnails. In the Teams tab, you lot become a more detailed breakdown of your organization. My demo account had three teams (Editorial, Sales, and Man Resource) with multiple channels for each, which you can customize or star to list as a favorite team or channel.
Features
The Microsoft Teams mobile app is calorie-free on launch features by design. Microsoft aimed to keep information technology simple: conversation, calling, search, alerts, channel action, and file viewing is most all you lot tin currently practice inside the Microsoft Teams app itself (though you tin open files from Microsoft Teams into the associated Microsoft Office 365 mobile apps: Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, Word, etc.
The about prominent features of the Microsoft Teams mobile app are chat and calling. Conversation includes basic formatting options and photo upload, and some rich text editing features if yous tap the "A" icon in a conversation window. These features include assuming/italics/underline, text highlighting, and font colors. I was able to pull in device-level emoji and GIF integrations from my iPhone, only i shortcoming is that the custom Microsoft Teams sticker sets are not currently available on mobile. You can also click the "Bookmark" icon on whatsoever message to salve information technology, and access all of your saved messages in the Saved list when you click the "More than" icon.
The calling functionality from within the chat tab worked well. When I tapped the "Phone" icon at the top right-mitt side of my conversation with PCMag senior editor Juan Martinez, Microsoft Teams immediately started a phone call from within the app; the call quality came through conspicuously. At the moment, iOS only includes voice calling merely Microsoft noted that Microsoft Teams includes native Apple tree CallKit integration on iOS. This makes incoming calls announced like any other call, including ringing on the lock screen. Video calling is available for the Android app besides. You tin can also chat with T-Bot (the Microsoft Teams'south Slackbot-like assistant conversation bot) to answer whatever basic questions near how the app works.
In the master feed, the about powerful feature is Search. When you lot enter a query, you can filter by message or by people to speedily detect the chat or information for which you're looking. There's no file search from the main feed, though. For that, you lot'll have to get into a specific channel and tab from Conversations over to Files to see all of the associated documents, spreadsheets, slideshows, etc., associated with that particular channel. Microsoft Teams is organized that way on purpose and then that files are always associated with specific projects and teams. I was able to open and view files inside the Microsoft Teams app, but once again, for mobile editing, you'll have to open the associated Microsoft Function 365 app.
Finally, in the Settings section of the app, in that location are a few basic options. You lot tin set your user status as bachelor, decorated, practice non disturb, or away. You can also toggle push notifications on and off for chats, mentions, replies, followed channel posts, likes, and team update alerts.
Bottom Line
Microsoft Teams is an extremely rich desktop feel, letting you lot collaborate on files and projects, conduct meetings, conversation with coworkers, and plug into an assortment of third-political party services and chat bot experiences—without ever leaving the app. The mobile app is not nearly as avant-garde in terms of bachelor features at launch, but Microsoft kept it simple on purpose. The app is easy to navigate and works well as an on-the-become extension of the chat, native calling, and basic collaboration features in Microsoft Teams.
The Microsoft Teams app works far more effectively for mobile file editing if you have the other Microsoft Office 365 apps installed. Nosotros'd like to see video calling on iOS and the availability of the custom Microsoft Teams sticker sets in mobile conversation, though. All the same, as it stands, the current Microsoft Teams mobile app is a good first.
